William Watts Stelle ’40

WHILE RECOVERING from throat cancer surgery, Bill Stelle died unexpectedly of heart failure on Feb. 7, 1992. Son of Frederick W. Stelle 1893, he was born in Ossining, N.Y., and prepared at St. Paul's School. At Princeton he roomed with Rollo Hazard, but left in his junior year and went to work for the Ford Exhibit at the New York World's Fair, In WWII Bill served in the Canal Zone as an army captain. He then completed college at N.Y.U., where he received the prestigious Tuttle Award and a Phi Beta Kappa key.

Settling in the area of Mount Kisco and Bedford, N.Y., Bill became head of structural engineering for the American Electric Power Co. in the early 1960sa position he was to occupy until retirement in 1983. For 17 years Bill was extremely active as chairman and member of the Bedford planning boards. He had been a vestry man of All Saints Episcopal Church in Briarcliff, N.Y., and was senior warden of Katonah's St. Luke's Episcopal Church at the time of his death.

Bill is survived by his wife of 50 years, Mary Kendrick; and was the father of Frederick W., Mary S., William W. Jr., and the late Edward A, and the grandfather of eight. To all of them, the Class sends its sincere condolences and deepest sympathy.
