Abyssinia’s Samuel Johnson: Ethiopian Thought in the Making of an English Author
(Oxford University Press) This book examines the influence of Africa on the English author Samuel Johnson. Belcher examines Johnson’s various works to show this influence. She shows that many European texts are best understood as texts that are spoken through, texts that are known as energumens. Belcher is an assistant professor of African literature in the department of comparative literature and the Center for African American Studies at Princeton University.
