Christen A. Smith ’99 integrates years of fieldwork into an exploration of the state violence and repression behind the supposed “Afro paradise” that is Brazil. Smith is an assistant professor of African and African diaspora studies and anthropology at the University of Texas-Austin and works to stop anti-black state violence in Brazil.
