(Columbia University Press) In this book, Richter argues that “afterness” or what follows, is integral to the thoughts and aesthetics of modernity. Through close readings of writers such as Kant, Adorno, and Derrida, Richter examines afterness, showing how the study of what comes next exposes more information about things like personal and cultural memory, translation, photography, and hope. Richter is a professor of German studies and comparative literature and chair of the Department of German Studies at Brown University.
