While France’s Louis IX took part in the crusades, he also placed significant attention on persuading Muslims to convert to Christianity voluntarily. The Apple of His Eye (Princeton University Press) examines the results of his efforts among Muslims and the resistance he was met with, as well as what happened to those who did convert and accept Louis IX’s invitation to come to France as Christians.
