(Museum of New Mexico Press) Pettit explores the artistic heritage of New Mexico through profiles of the artists from this state that have received a National Heritage Fellowship from the National Endowment for the Arts. Since 1982, there have been 15 such artists, more than any other state. Among them are potters, weavers, storytellers, and musicians. Pettit is a poet and a National Endowments for the Arts Fellow; he has written books and produced documentaries on the history and traditions of various aspects of New Mexican life.
