The Assassination of Hole in the Day

(Borealis Books)   This book discusses the 1868 assassination of Hole in the Day, a self-styled leader of the Ojibwe tribe in Mississippi. He was stopped by at least 12 Ojibwe men and fatally shot on June 27, when he was on his way to Washington, D.C., to fight the planned removal of the Mississippi Ojibwe to a reservation at White Earth. Throughout the book, Treuer focuses on interactions with other tribes, the role of Ojibwe culture and tradition, and interviews with tribe elders to try and explain the events leading up to his death. Treuer is a professor of Ojibwe at Bemidji State University.
