Beau Monde on Empire’s Edge (University of Toronto Press) is a biography of a group of men who melded Soviet and Ukrainian culture through theater. Because they were at the edge of the Soviet empire, they were forgotten, but now their work, which intertwines art and the early Soviet state, is receiving much attention.
