Set on the campuses of Princeton University and the University of California, Berkeley, this is a story in two parts about a pregnant student. Part One: The student has the baby and marries her boyfriend; this gives her the stability she needs to become a cellist. Part Two: She has an abortion to pursue a musical career that never materializes. In comparing the two versions of this story, this novel means to show the terrible toll abortion takes on women. Shennum lives in Georgia with her husband, three cats, and two dogs.
