Britons: Forging the Nation 1707-1837

(Yale University Press) Combining imperial, political, social, and cultural history, Colley examines how a more cohesive British nation was invented after 1707 and how this new identity was nurtured through war, religion, trade, and empire. This revised paperback edition, which was first published in 1992, contains a new preface by the author discussing the book’s genesis and critical reception, as well as recent political developments. Colley is Shelby M. C. Davis 1958 Professor of History at Princeton University.
