Catholic Pirates and Greek Merchants: A Maritime History of the Mediterranean

(Princeton University Press) In this book, Greene fills in part of the history of the early modern maritime world by focusing on the Mediterranean, showing that the maritime order was much more complex than traditionally thought. She specifically examines the conflicts between Catholic pirates of Malta and their victims, Greek merchants. Greene delves in the archives of Malta’s pirate court to show that pirates, far from being outside the law, were vital actors in the continuous negotiations of legality and illegality in the Mediterranean Sea. Greene is a professor of history and Hellenic studies at Princeton University.
