(Cornell University Press) Right-bank Ukraine, one of the last additions in the late 18th century to the Russian empire, might seem like a surprising place for a Russian nationalist movement to emerge. But that is where the empire’s most politically successful Russian nationalist movement was born. In Children of Rus’, Hillis explores why the movement was so successful and offers a new interpretation of state-society relations under tsarism. Hillis is an assistant professor of Russian history at the University of Chicago.
