The Chinese and the Iron Road: Building the Transcontinental Railroad

The Chinese laborers who built much of the transcontinental railroad have rarely been recognized as individuals. The Chinese and the Iron Road (Stanford University Press) tries to shed light on the workers’ individual lives and struggles, affirming their importance to the development of the United States. Fishkin and Chang ’70 are co-directors of the Chinese Railroad Workers in North America Project at Stanford.
