The Civil War: A Concise History

(Oxford University Press) This 94-page history book seeks to explain the events of the Civil War, how it transpired, and its meaning. He explores the war’s origins; the major political, social, and military events of the period; and the war itself. He focuses on two themes throughout the book: how the war shifted from a limited conflict to restore the Union to an all-out war that would transform Southern society, and how the conflict   became a battle to abolish slavery. Masur is a professor in American institutions and values at Trinity College.
