The Colonels’ Coup and the American Embassy: A Diplomat’s View of the Breakdown of Democracy in Cold War Greece
(Penn State University Press) This book details the Colonels’ Coup of April 21, 1967, that led to a seven-year military rule of Greece. The right-wing, authoritarian regime that then took power was supported by the U.S. Keeley, who was then working in the U.S. Embassy in Greek, uses this account to show how U.S. policy was formulated, debated, and implemented during the years between 1966 and 1969. Keeley was the U.S. ambassador in Athens from 1985 to 1989 and is the chairman of the Council for the National Interest Foundation.
