In The Color of Modernity: S ão Paulo and the Making of Race and Nation in Brazil , Barbara Weinstein ’73 examines the role of race, gender, and regionalism in the formation of national identities in Brazil. She explores how São Paulo became associated with prosperity while the country’s Northeast region has come to represent backwardness and São Paulo’s racial “Other.” Weinstein is a professor of history at New York University.
