Creative License: The Law and Culture of Digital Sampling

(Duke University Press) Digital sampling, the act of incorporating snippets of existing recordings into new ones, has revolutionized the music industry. DiCola and McLeod interviewed more than 100 musicians, managers, lawyers, professionals, journalists, and scholars to put digital sampling into context, while arguing that the current system for licensing sampling is inefficient and limits artists’ creativity.   DiCola is an assistant professor at Northwestern University School of Law, and is a board member and former research director of the Future of Music Coalition.
