The Culture of Diagram

(Stanford University Press) This book explores the terrain where words meet pictures and formulas meet figures, and foregrounds diagrams as tools for blurring those boundaries to focus on the production of knowledge as process. The authors examine the role the diagram played in transforming late 18th and early 19th century sciences and arts and continues through 19th century physics to the reorganization of vision and experience involved in quantum physics. Bender is the Jean G. and Morris M. Doyle Professor in Interdisciplinary Studies at Stanford University. Marrinan is a professor of art history at Stanford.
