Religious traditions in the United States are characterized by ongoing assimilation with the culture, as in mainline Protestant churches, and defiant rejection of the culture, like in Mormonism. However, Cathleen Kaveny, in A Culture of Engagement (Georgetown University Press), says a third possibility is one in which religious faith and culture can come together to encounter, challenge, contribute to, and correct one another. Kaveny is a professor at Boston College with appointments in the department of theology and the law school.
