Docile
As the daughter of Korean immigrants, Song internalizes the model minority myth at an early age. It informs her upbringing, from navigating a new elementary school to attending the best Ivy League universities. At some point, Song realizes she doesn’t fit the mold set by her ambitious Asian American parents, but her mother cautions, “Happiness is what unexceptional people tell themselves when they don’t have the talent and drive to go after real success.” It all unravels when Song enters a psychiatric hospital and meets others who share the same struggles. Docile (Simon & Schuster) is a coming-of-age story about Song discovering her own path.
