Dostoevsky: A Writer in His Time

(Princeton University Press) In this abridged version of his five-volume biography Dostoevsky , the author sets the writer’s works (from his first novel Poor Folk , to Crime and Punishment , and The Brothers Karamazov ) within a personal, historical, and ideological context. As much a cultural history of 19th century Russia as it is the story of one man, this single volume maintains the original’s combination of biography, literary criticism, and intellectual history. It creates a picture of the world in which Dostoevsky lived, and presents a reinterpretation of his life and work. Frank is a professor emeritus of Slavic and comparative literature at Stanford and Princeton. The five volumes of his Dostoevsky biography, published between 1976 and 2002, won a National Book Critics Circle Award among other honors.
