The Elusive West and the Contest for Empire, 1713-1763

(University of North Carolina Press) In this book, Mapp investigates 18th-century diplomacy involving North America while linking geographic ignorance about the American West to European’s geopolitical designs. He reconstructs European ideas about the unknown Western regions and shows that a Pacific focus is crucial to understanding the causes, course, and consequences of the Seven Years’ War. Mapp is an associate professor of history at the College of William and Mary.
