Essential Fictions (Northwestern University Press), translated by Val Vinokur *01, is a collection of 72 short stories by twentieth-century Russian writer Isaac Babel. Babel was born into a thriving Jewish community in 1894 and witnessed both the Bolshevik Revolution and the Civil War, which he wrote as fiction.
