Freud: The Making of an Illusion (Metropolitan) reveals a Freud different than the one we think we know: Not only did he have many false ideas about the mind, but he also blundered greatly in dealing with patients, never cured anyone, and falsified case histories to advance his career. His legend has persisted only because of his self-invention as a master psychologist and his followers’ censorship campaigns.
