“Where are you from from?” is the question at the heart of Youn’s new book of poetry, which reflects on the Asian American experience of being viewed as an outsider. Youn, who is Korean American and raised in Houston, Texas, beautifully captures the conflicting emotions that many Asian Americans feel because of how the community is viewed by Western ideas. From From (Graywolf Press) dissects stereotypes, micro/macroaggressions, assimilation, self-doubt, and other common factors that lead to various generalizations that have been harmful for Asian Americans. Youn’s latest presents a study on the impact of racism.
