A Geometry of Music: Harmony and Counterpoint in the Extended Common Practice
(Oxford University Press) In this book, Tymoczko, noted for his geometrical approach to music theory, identifies the five basic music features that contribute to the sense of tonality and how these features reappear throughout the history of Western music. By using works from Bach to Bill Evans, he argues that Western music comprises an extended common practice stretching from the late Middle Ages to the present. Tymoczko is a composer, music theorist, and an associate professor at Princeton.
