He Moved West with America (Archway Publishing) is the biography of William Carr Lane, great-great-grandfather to author Bill Carson ’50. A prominent pre-Civil War political leader, Lane wrote letters to his wife and kept a journal as he traveled the Santa Fe Trail in New Mexico, providing rich detail for Carson to draw on. Carson’s first book inspired by Lane was the fictional Peter Becomes a Trail Man (University of New Mexico Press).
