As the title implies, Tatar dives into the history of heroism — inspired by the male-centric Joseph Cambell book, The Hero with a Thousand Faces. Exploring the stories of iconic women throughout history including Cassandra, Scheherazade, Nancy Drew, and Wonder Woman, Tatar reveals the courage, defiance, and care of these figures which often  resulted in social justice pursuits that benefited the greater good. A world-renowned folklorist, Tatar says she’s been writing this book her entire life, but it was the pandemic that really pushed her to fully bring The Heroine with 1,001 Faces (Liveright Press) to fruition.
