In this collection of stories, Kirchick presents a different perspective challenging the belief that concepts like “toxic masculinity” can push boys toward negative influences and unproductive behaviors. Instead he offers nuanced insights into the ways boys navigate friendships, relationships, and sexuality along their road to becoming better people. How Boys Learn (Atmosphere Press) captures a collection of diverse experiences from individuals who seem to have it all — the star athletes and the boys who come from two-parent homes, among others — to show they too struggle with fears and vulnerabilities. Kirchick ultimately aims to impart valuable lessons on boys as they explore the complexities of growing up.
