The Huainanzi: A Guide to the Theory and Practice of Government in Early Han China
(Columbia University Press) The Huainanzi , compiled at the court of Liu An, King of Huainan, during the second century B.C., is an articulation of Western Han philosophy and statecraft outlining “all that a modern monarch needs to know.” Composed at a time when the Chinese imperial system was still forming, the book identified keys to successful rule and attempted to frame the terms of political and philosophical debate. John S. Major is an independent scholar and writer, and a former professor of history at Dartmouth College. Sarah A. Queen is a professor of history at Connecticut College. Andrew Seth Meyer is an assistant professor of history at Brooklyn College. Harold D. Roth is a professor of religious studies and East Asian studies at Brown University.
