Hubert Harrison: The Voice of Harlem Radicalism, 1883-1918

(Columbia University Press) This book recounts the life of Hubert Harrison, a writer, orator, educator, critic, and political activist. He combined class-consciousness and anti-white supremacist race consciousness into a coherent political radicalism. His ideas inspired “New Negro” militants, including Marcus Garvey. This biography offers insights on race, class, religion, immigration, democracy, and social change in America. Perry is an independent scholar.
