A new translation of Carlos de Sigüenza y Góngora’s famous story of Alonso Ramírez and his journeys around the world after being captured by English pirates, Infortunios de Alonso Ramírez/The Misfortunes of Alonso Ramírez (Rutgers University Press) presents both Spanish and English text along with extensive footnotes. The text is complemented by records uncovered by José F. Buscaglia-Salgado ’86 that prove Ramírez was a real person — not fictional, as had been assumed for centuries.
