In The Iraq Wars (Oxford University Press), Samuel Helfont *15 traces how American conflicts in Iraq — from the Gulf War of 1991 to the American invasion in 2003 — did not unfold as isolated incidents but as a deeply intertwined chain of events. For the first time, Helfont combines the books and testimonies of academics, journalists, soldiers, and statesmen into a single digestible volume. In doing so, he reveals how each phase of the broadening conflict emerged out of the unresolved aftermath of the last. Arguing that these conflicts are best understood as a sequence, Helfont’s book offers a concise account of one of the most consequential and relevant geopolitical narratives of today.
