The Jerusalem File
(Europa Editions) Set in Jerusalem amid the Arab-Israeli conflict, this posthumously published novel follows Levin, an ex-Israeli security service officer turned private investigator who is hired to tail his friend’s adulterous wife. Spying on her, Levin develops an obsession with the woman. After her lover is mysteriously murdered, she goes to Levin for an unexpected request — and Levin’s moral compass is challenged. The New York Times wrote, “Stone packs this brief but moving character study with beautiful writing and much thought about the numbing experience of living with the constant expectation of sudden death from an enemy you can’t quite bring yourself to hate.”
