Little Trains to Faraway Places (Railroads Past and Present)

(Indiana University Press) In this first-person narrative, Zimmerman recounts his travels on the world’s narrow-gauge railroads. Frequently used to cross-challenging terrains that larger trains cannot navigate, the small trains of narrow-gauge railroads range from the glamorous South African Blue Train and Australia’s Queenslander to the electrified network of mountain railways in Switzerland. Including more than 100 color illustrations, the book weaves history and travelogue in a tribute to these rare railways and their trains. Karl Zimmerman is the author of numerous books about trains, including All Aboard!: Passenger Trains Around the World and The GrandLuxe Express: Traveling in High Style .
