By examining the history of the self in the Byzantine Empire, Liturgical Subjects: Christian Ritual, Biblical Narrative, and the Formation of the Self in Byzantium challenges narratives of Christian subjectivity that focus only on classical antiquity and the Western Middle Ages. Krueger writes that the lives of Orthodox Christians were profoundly shaped by patterns of worship introduced and disseminated by Byzantine clergy. Kreuger is a professor of religious studies at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro.
