In Jane Austen’s masterpiece, Pride and Prejudice, middle sister Mary Bennet is given no more than a dozen lines of dialogue and described as little more than “plain.” Mary B. (Random House) is the story of the “plain” sister from her perspective — a reimagining of the character that ascribes her agency, personality, and intelligence.
