From Mission to Modernity: Evangelicals, Reformers, and Education in Nineteenth Century Egypt

(I.B. Tauris) During the 19th century, the Egyptian state under Muhammad Ali Pasha sought to create a new relationship with children, aided by the introduction of modern forms of education. Sedra describes the ways in which the state aimed to ensure children’s loyal service and the consequences that they caused as students in Egypt’s new modern schools resisted efforts to control their behavior. Sedra is an assistant professor of history at Simon Fraser University.
