Music in the Words: Musical Form and Counterpoint in the Twentieth-Century Novel
(Ashgate Publishing) In this book, Shockley examines several 20th-century prose works in which the authors attempt writing in a musical form, or imbue the work with musical counterpoint. Including discussions of James Joyce, Anthony Burgess, William Gaddis, David Markson, and musicology, his book approaches the study of music in literature from the perspective of a scholar with musical training. Shockley is a composer, and teaches composition and theory at California State University, Long Beach.
