This book is Gussow’s quest to embrace and live out the dream of Martin Luther King Jr.’s vision for a more just and unified America. This journey takes him from a blues partnership in 1980s Harlem, through his studies at Princeton, and more. At its core, My Family and I (Emancipation Books) is also an enduring interracial love story and the birth of Gussow and his wife’s musically gifted son that comes out of it. With the explosion of protests following the death of George Floyd, Gussow finds himself circling back to King’s dream of community, offering hope for America’s future.
