In the second half of the 20th century, nuclear bombs rained down on the Nevada National Security Test Site — and Emmet Gowin, professor emeritus of visual arts, remains the only official photographer with sustained access to the site. In The Nevada Test Site (Princeton University Press), Gowin publishes photographs he took in the ’90s depicting a pockmarked desert among other unsettling sights, and pens an essay about his experience with the site, its history, and the significance of these images today.
