Nine Island by Jane Alison ’83 is an intimate novel told by female protagonist J, who after decades of disasters with men, is trying to decide whether to withdraw from romantic love forever. J wrestles with this question from inside her condominium in Miami Beach, while translating Ovid’s stories about Eros, before befriending a nurse who tells her, “If you retire from love … then you retire from life.”
