(University of Chicago Press) The author examines a wide range of controversies over films, books, artworks, music, and television in dozens of cities to learn what provokes public protest. He finds that protests over art are deeply rooted in local concerns and are critical to working out differences in a civil society. Tepper is an associate professor of sociology and associate director of the Curb Center for Art, Enterprise, and Public Policy at Vanderbilt University.
