Three decades of Europe’s most explosive time form the background of this memoir. The author was the only child of a German mother and a Greek father. Papachristou ’s idyllic childhood came to an end during World War II when he saw cadavers in the street and Nazi teachers in school. In the aftermath of a brutal occupation and a bloody civil war in Greece, Papachristou found redemption by his admission to Princeton. He graduated summa cum laude and earned an MFA in architecture. He describes events ranging from the 1936 Olympics and the famous Greek "Oxhi" of 1940 to the horrors of Auschwitz.
