(University of North Carolina Press) This book examines some of the hundreds of little-known women who worked for major metropolitan newspapers at the start of the 20th century. Many of the women Fahs writes about were well known at the time, but have been neglected because they wrote for sensational “yellow” newspapers or the women’s page. However, Fahs argues that their work opened up new opportunities for women’s careers and lifestyles. Fahs is a professor of history at the University of California, Irvine.
