The Papers of Thomas Jefferson: Volume 40: 4 March to 10 July 1803

(Princeton University Press) The first volume of The Papers of Thomas Jefferson was published in 1950. Volume 40 brings readers from the third year of Jefferson’s presidency through the United States’ acquisition of the Louisiana Territory and his subsequent preparations to send an exploratory expedition. Among these correspondences also are a letter in which Jefferson sets down his religious creed for friends. Oberg is a senior research scholar in history at Princeton University.
