Despite the violence and feuds that plagued medieval communes in Florence, Italy, society was preoccupied with peace. Peace and Penance in Late Medieval Italy (Princeton University Press) explores how leaders of the time used peace agreements for a variety of solutions, including ending neighborhood feuds, and how the religious kiss of peace was incorporated in the secular world.
