(Arcadia Publishing) Arrigale and Keels present Philadelphia as the birthplace of America’s consumer culture. Philadelphia’s thriving middle class made the city home to some of America’s largest and most innovative department and specialty stores, and this book illustrates how these emporia taught generations of Philadelphians “the proper way to live.” Arrigale is an antiques appraiser and lecturer. Keels is a Philadelphia historian, and has written three other books in the Images of America series.
