Poetry in Pieces: Cesar Vallejo and Lyric Modernity

(University of California Press) This book is the first major study of Peruvian poet César Vallejo (1892-1938) in English in more than 30 years. In it, Clayton performs close readings of Vallejo’s writings, combining that with cultural, theoretical, and historical analysis. She also connects Vallejo to the larger international modernism and avant-garde movement, in the process, shedding new light on a key figure in Latin American literature. Clayton is an associate professor of comparative literature and Spanish and Portuguese at the University of California, Los Angeles.
