Richard Potter: America’s First Black Celebrity

Though he is not well known today, 200 years ago Richard Potter was the first entertainer to win national fame, and the first black person to do so. Richard Potter (University of Virginia Press) is a biography documenting Potter’s enormous success and the difficulties in a time when few African Americans were successful.
